Yesterday I got to travel with my school to a neighboring village called San Antonio, where we got to talk with some of the people who have lived in the village all their lives and they shared some of their customs with us. Weaving is a huge part of their culture and their means for making a living. Little girls learn how to weave as early as five years old. We watched a demonstration of a traditional Mayan wedding ceremony, ate ¨comida tipica¨ cooked over a wood fire like families in the village used to do, and we each took a turn at trying to make tortillas. Mine were nowhere near the shape of an even circle and were a little bit THICK. lol (i had to eat what i made) The food was delicious- mostly rice and vegetables and what they call pepian is a savory tomato sauce.
